Smoothies became popular in the 1960s. At the time they were mostly comprised of fruit and made thicker with ice to resemble milk shakes because the original maker was lactose intolerant. Now there is a whole new world of smoothies. Smoothies can help you lose weight because they can be nutrient packed and keep you feeling full. Whether you are searching for a snack, a meal replacement or healthy smoothies for weight loss, the choices are endless. Making a smoothie is one of the easiest recipes you can make. You can create your own flavors. Experiment. Be creative. Here are a few recipes to get you started.
What you need:
- First you need liquid. It can be milk (skim or 2% is best), almond or soy milk. It can be flavored water, spring water or tea. (Try the instant peach tea packets)
- You need a protein base like Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or protein powder
- You need fruit and/or vegetables. (They can be frozen but canned isn’t recommended.)
- You need ice if your fruit isn’t frozen.
A good rule of thumb for two servings is 1 cup of the liquid, one cup of the fruit, and a small container (6oz) of Greek yogurt. A tablespoon of peanut butter, or one serving of protein powder. One cup of ice. A banana gives smoothies a nice texture. Bananas can also be frozen. Note: Using frozen fruit eliminates the need for ice.

Adding a dash of sea salt will increase the minerals. You can add aloe vera, cacao (raw chocolate), goji berries, or flax seeds to boost the nutrition in your smoothie. You can add fresh or frozen vegetables. Be sure to add leafy vegetables last. Add Cinnamon to stabilize blood sugar or add cayenne to increase metabolism. Whatever your taste, enjoying one healthy smoothie for weight loss each morning will help you reach your weight loss goal.
