Not only are smoothies delicious, they’re also very nutritious as well. All smoothies take are a few basic ingredients that blend together perfectly to make a yummy and healthy treat that’s easy and very simple to make.
So exactly how do you make a smoothie? If you’re planning on making a fruit smoothie, then you should add the fruit first. Your fruit, whether fresh or frozen, will be the base of your smoothie. You can add one select fruit or add a variety.
It’s actually quite simple!
Popular fruit choices for smoothies include, but not limited to; Strawberries, peaches, pineapples, raspberries, apples, kiwis, avocados, mangoes, pomegranates, blueberries, bananas, oranges, pineapple, and watermelon. When deciding on your fruit combination, you should keep in mind that fruits that are on the more juicy side such as watermelon and oranges will make your smoothie more watery. Popular combinations are strawberry banana and raspberry peach. You can experiment with different combinations to find one (or several) that you like. If your smoothie is watery, you can add a thickener like protein powder.
Once you’ve added the fruit (and a thickener if applicable), it’s time to add the liquid. Just as there are a variety of fruit choices, the variety of liquids you can choose from is just as many. Skim milk, whole milk, soy milk, sweetened Greek yogurt, plain Greek yogurt, frozen yogurt, almond milk, coconut milk, fruit juice, ice cream, sherbet, sparkling water, and even water itself. When deciding on which liquid to add to your smoothie, you should keep in mind that each liquid will add a different taste and thickness to your smoothie.
An optional step is to add protein if you desire to make your smoothie more like an actual meal. Whey and soy protein powders are popular additions, as is sprouted brown rice. You can also make your smoothie even healthier by adding kale, spinach, celery, or beetroot. Even if you’re not fond of greens, when blended well enough you won’t even be able to taste it. You can also use a green plant powder.
If you want a sweeter tasting smoothie, you can add a sweetner through either adding plain sugar or a healthier choices such as; Splenda (which is an artificial sweetener), agave nectar, Stevia (which is a natural sugar substitute), honey, or a ripe banana. If you want to add more flavor or enhance flavor, you can add; Nutella, peanut butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, cayenne pepper, almond extract, coconut shavings, and any other kind of extract that you may find suitable to add in your smoothie.
You can also add ice cubes if you desire. However you shouldn’t add too many as that will thin the smoothie out too much; You’ll be able to add more ice cubes if needed but you won’t be able to thicken the smoothie back up without adding more fruit or more thickening powder. In exchange for ice cubes, you can use frozen fruit which will also enhance the flavor of the smoothie.
Once everything has been added into the blender or the food processor, it can now all be blended together. If your mixing appliance doesn’t have a “smoothie” or “shake” mode, you can simply choose “puree” and that will work just fine. Let it blend for about 1 minute, starting slow and on a level no higher than medium for best results. As the fruit, ice, powder blends together, you can turn up the level. Ensure that everything gets properly blended and then pour your smoothie into a glass and then enjoy.
