This Super Simple Grape Smoothie Recipe Is Pure Awesomeness

Grapes are an undervalued smoothie ingredient because they are good sources of Vitamin C and antioxidants. They’re also a healthy natural sweetener for smoothies, which is why this grape smoothie doesn’t have any added sugar, honey, or syrups. The skin contains most of the nutritional value, so do not peel them! (Looking for a great blender?  Don’t forget to check out the best blender for smoothies)

One interesting antioxidant in grapes is resveratrol. Red grapes contain higher levels of it, but all grapes have it, and it is believed to help the body repair damage in the brain, heart, and other organs. Resveratrol also helps repair damage at the cellular level and aid in kidney function. Resveratrol can also improve circulation throughout the body and thereby boost metabolism. This combined with the low calories and mild laxative quality of grapes mean they’re excellent for dieters.

Blueberries are also rich in antioxidants. Experts believe they help cognitive function. They are a low glycemic index food, which helps offset the high levels of natural sugar found in the grapes in this recipe. The antioxidants whose levels are highest in the blueberry are called anthocyanins, and they promote health in the circulatory and nervous systems, as well as other parts of the body.

3/4 cup halved seedless grapes, any color
3/4 cup cleaned blueberries
1/2 cup grape juice, any color
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup ice

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend on medium to high until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

If this Super Simple Blueberry Grape Smoothie recipe is a little too easy for you, or if you want to throw in even more nutrition, try adding chia seeds. Soak one tablespoon of whole seeds for about 10-15 minutes just before you add them to the blender. One ounce of chia seeds has 4.4 grams of highly-digestible protein and over 100% of the recommended daily amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds also contain trace minerals in significant quantities. If you like the gelatinous texture of soaked chia, you may even prefer stirring them directly into the smoothie rather than blending them into it.

This blueberry grape smoothie is great for breakfast, as a snack, or to drink on the go. You can even top it with a little whipped cream and call it dessert. No matter how you eat it, you will surely enjoy its delicious flavor and many health benefits!
